Rye Planting: Brining Rye Back to Kentucky
View the first newsletter from the Kentucky Rye Initiative.
Note from Dr. Dave Van Sanford, University of Kentucky
The collaborative project “Bringing Rye Back to Kentucky” is up and running! Please find the inaugural rye newsletter, prepared by Dr. Ela Szuleta, our field coordinator. Early planted rye has emerged, and, from what I have seen, stands and plant development are excellent. Check out the small inset picture on the right from our rye plots in Logan County, planted on October 4th. Interest in rye continues to surge. Dr. Lauren Brzozowski gave a presentation on rye at the American Society of Agronomy meetings recently and she reported that there was huge interest in the crop. Dr. Tim Phillips and Lauren continue to work on reducing rye height, and you will have a chance to see Tim’s “knee-high rye” if you come to the 2024 Grain Gathering in Lexington, May 8-9. Details to follow.
